Recording notes:

  • Create a new document 2560×1440
  • Create a background rectangle and fill it with: #2d414a
  • Lock that layer and create a new layer for the badge artwork
  • 350×350 ellipse with 10pt #e3c89a stroke, no fill
  • Offset that path 25px to create the second ring
  • Create a star, Radius 1: 15px, Radius 2: 6px with 5 points
  • Drag this star into the brush panel and create a pattern brush
  • Set the pattern brush properties to 40% spacing
  • Fill the star with #e3c89a
  • Offset the outer path again +52px
  • Offset this new outermost path again -28px
  • Apply that star brush to this path to create the ring of stars
  • Create a line 700px long at 90º and give it the same tan stroke we’ve been using
  • Grab the variable stroke width tool and stretch the middle part of the path to about 2px to just put something there
  • Go to both ends and pinch them tightly
  • Go back to the middle and move this back to about 1px
  • Center this using a ring as the key object
  • Transform this first line 45º and 3x copies
  • Duplicate and paste this wheel of lines in place and change the stroke color to hot pink
  • Scale this, non-uniform, 90% vertical
  • Drag this below the top tan lines and double click on transform in Appearance panel and adjust to 9º (360/40) and add 19 copies
  • Duplicate this wheel of lines and paste in place
  • Scale this non-uniform, 90% vertical again
  • Drag this below all the lines and edit the transform here again and adjust it to 3º and 59x copies
  • Select all the lines and sample the tan color for the line so they all have the same color
  • Group these lines together
  • Select the outer ring and copy it to use as a mask to knock out the middle of the bursting lines
  • Create a rectangle 600x135px and align to the center of the badge
  • Duplicate this rectangle and widen it to 740px and change the color to a yellow color (just to see the shape against the other) and then drag the layer beneath the top piece of the ribbon in the layers panel
  • Turn on Smart Guides and use the Pen tool to add an anchor point the exact middle of both side of this larger rectangle
  • Nudge each of those anchor points inward 30px
  • Duplicate the top shape and shut off that layer
  • Select the top layer still turned on and the ribbon cut layer and Minus Front
  • Then nudge the ribbon sides downward 20px
  • Use the Pen tool to add an anchor and “snap” it to the bottom outer corner of the front piece of the ribbon (this is to make the hinge on which the bottom part of the ribbon will swing)
  • Use the Direct Selection Tool to select the bottom inner point on each side and nudge inward 20px
  • Fill all the ribbon shapes with the same color
  • Select both shapes and group them and duplicate and paste them in front
  • Swap the fill for the stroke and set the stroke color to the background color and make the stroke size 10pt with rounded corners
  • Group the whole badge together
  • Add some text and then bring in some texture and show how to quickly use it as a mask to top off the effect.
