Create a 3D Character Photoshop CC Tutorial

Learn the secrets you need to know to create and work with a 3D character using Fuse and Photoshop CC in this tutorial!

We’ll create a character in Adobe Fuse and export it to Photoshop where we’ll change the lighting and texture and then use a few Photoshop filters to create a streaking effect for our Photoshop 3D model.

Tutorial Recording Notes:

Disclaimer: these are the actual notes I used to record this video and are written in a language you may or may not understand. Hopefully, you find them useful or cool.

  1. If you have Fuse, create a character in Fuse (don’t export textures?) and then save it to the CC library
  2. (provide this character as a downloadable free asset for people who need it)
  3. Share the website with other free and paid 3D models at this point
  4. Create new PSD at 1920×1080
  5. Make the background a gray color
  6. Shut off the textures
  7. Position model
  8. Choose pose (show how to have only poses in menu and get thumbnails instead of list)
  9. Floating, legs bent, on page 5 should be good
  10. Select all the materials and set shine and reflection to 0%
  11. Set the material diffusion to R:200, G:200, B:255
  12. Set the material specular to R:25 G:65 B:125
  13. Select the Environment and dump the IBL
  14. Select infinite light 1 and dump the shadows, set the color to a cyan blue 0, 200, 225, and intensity to 100%
  15. Set the coordinates to -165º, 45º, 165º
  16. Create second light and set to hot pink 245, 0, 175 with no shadow
  17. Set the coordinates here to 145º -45º -145º
  18. Select the 3D model and set the Y axis position to -45º
  19. Select the Scene and untick “Shadows”
  20. Select the 3D object, expand the selection by 20px and render the 3D layer out
  21. Duplicate it, render the 3D, and rasterize it so we can push some pixels
  22. Drag in the space background
  23. Set document to 16bit
  24. Duplicate the background and blur 100px and duplicate until it’s 100% opacity
  25. Turn on top galaxy layer and set it to 20% opacity
  26. Curves layer, flatten curve a bit, Multiply blend, set to 50% opacity
  27. Create grain layer and set to 35% opacity for the background
  28. Set document back to 8bits
  29. Start building layers to wind blast soft brush painted bits and mask to create the 8bit looking streaks
  30. Duplicate model and drag above everything
  31. Rotate to the right and wind blast a bunch and rotate back into normal place
  32. Use the Blend If sliders to blend this a bit and set to Lighten blend mode
  33. Duplicate the model up again and rotate/use wind AGAIN, but use the “Wind” method a few times and rotate this back in place
  34. Motion blur this 200px up and down and then set layer to Dissolve and reduce opacity to 40%
  35. Mask this to knock it away from in front of the model and then use Levels on the mask to lift the blacks to a mid grayish color
  36. Create a new layer above the background blurred+galaxy bit and set to Color blend mode
  37. Sample the blue and pink colors off the model and dab in colors to regularize the background. (Overkill this and blur to reduce the power)
  38. Create a Photoshop filter Noise layer with 10% noise and Soft Light/40% opacity the layer
  39. Create 2x High Pass layers at 30% opacity
  40. Selective Color – Whites: 45/0/-10/0 // Blacks: +15/+10/-5/-15
  41. Channel Mixer, black and white, Multiply @ 35% opacity
  42. Color Balance Layer: Shadows: +10/-10/0 // Highlights: -25/0/+10
  43. Merge all layers to new layer and Blending Options+tick off blue check for this layer
  44. Curves adjustment layer set to Luminosity blend mode to lift the black point and spike the highlights
  45. Add a LUT layer using DropBlues with a heavily blurred center dot covering the effect from the spaceman and reduce the opacity to 50%
  46. Consider using another LUT layer TealGreen effect and fade some teal color into the right side of the comp
