Tutorial Recording Notes:

Disclaimer: these are the actual notes I used to record this video and are written in a language you may or may not understand. Hopefully, you find them useful or cool.

  1. New document, 2560×1440 in size with RGB color
  2. Create background rectangle filled with #06062B
  3. Create a 1440×1440 ellipse filled with white to transparent white radial gradient and set the layer to Overlay
  4. Create the line artwork (all with white 2pt stroke)
  5. Ellipse 580×580
  6. Duplicate this path and name the layer “Base” and hide layer
  7. Duplicate this path again and name the layer “Shine” and hide layer
  8. Offset the unlocked path -15px
  9. Duplicate inner ellipse and name the layer “LowYellow” and hide it
  10. Duplicate inner ellipse (visible) and swap fill/stroke to see it
  11. Duplicate it a second time and move this copy -100 on the X and -50 on the Y and subtract front shape
  12. Swap that fill and stroke
  13. Offset the inner ellipse (visible) -40px and use the scissors to trim to two highlight paths
  14. Ellipse 1050×240
  15. Copy and paste ellipse & change size to 990×200 & center them together
  16. Select both ellipse and tilt them 35º
  17. Ellipse 80×80 and set as top left moon
  18. Offset this path 3x at 12px
  19. Ellipse 50×50 set as bottom right moon
  20. Offset this path 2x at 12px
  21. Ellipse 225×225 for large moon overlapping bottom right of planet
  22. 2x Ellipse 40×40 and overlap two areas of the planet ring
  23. 4x Ellipse 20×20 (2 as planet/moons, 2 as “dots” within the planet)
  24. Drag out 60×60 star and use arrow keys and Cmd/Drag to get to four long points
  25. Cmd/Ctrl and drag the round corners controls to make this more like a twinkling star
  26. Duplicate this twinkle 3x and position/resize a little around the planet
  27. Ellipse 15×15 and drag out/sharpen top point to make tear drop and tilt to 45º
  28. Duplicate 6x and place all seven of these shapes around the planet and size them a little to change it up
  29. Draw “S” curve with Curvature or regular Pen tool that would run across the middle of the center planet shapes (complete this path around the bottom of the shape)
  30. Duplicate that shape, nudge downward a little and rotate/tweak it to make it look as natural as possible
  31. Use Curvature Pen Tool to draw a little shape that fills in the area to the top left of the two wave shapes just drawn
  32. Use a combination of duplicated inner ellipse and each of the wave shapes to clip the wave shape as we wish
  33. Load in colors via the downloadable file and simply click on the folder of colors in the pop up that appears to auto-add them to your swatches panel. (Make the thumbnails larger for easier viewing)
  34. Add gradient to top moon with yellow/green colors and add this gradient to all the rings (each ring at 15% opacity)
  35. Add gradient to bottom moon with orange/pink colors and add this gradient to all the rings (each ring at 15% opacity)
  36. Add blue/pink gradient to the larger overlap moon and set gradient angle to 135º and set layer to Color Dodge
  37. Add pink/light pink gradient to front-most wave and adjust color and angle as needed
  38. Add blue/cyan gradient to both other wave shapes and adjust angles as needed
  39. Select the crescent shape overlay, fill with white, set to Overlay and 20% opacity
  40. Select the “LowYellow” layer, turn it on, bring it in front of everything else and fill with yellow/light yellow gradient at 135º (light yellow should be top left), set to Hard Light @ 80% opacity. Tweak gradient stops to get a small yellow highlight in bottom right of planet
  41. Select the “Base” layer and use the last two pink swatches to create a gradient fading from pink to 0% transparent, adjust angle so it’s in bottom right corner, set to Hard Light at 55%
  42. Select both outer ring paths and subtract front with Pathfinder
  43. Fill with a pale pink, set to Overlay and move this border ring shape to the very back
  44. Drag “Shine” layer to the top and fill with a white to transparent gradient, set to Overlay an opacity that looks good (45%-ish)
  45. Select both small moon shapes on the ring and sample the gradient we used in the larger front-most moon and set it so the pink is on the bottom and the blue gradient color stop is at 10% opacity and set the shapes to Screen blend mode
  46. Select both ring shapes and swap fill/stroke and subtract front to knock out the middle
  47. Move this shape all the way to the front
  48. Fill with Pink/Gray gradient at about 125º (pink in front, gray behind planet) and set this to Color Dodge blend mode
  49. Select one of the ellipse paths and copy it and use as a mask to make the ring that drops “behind” the planet almost invisible
  50. Duplicate the ring, set to Screen blend mode, drop the gray color stop to 0% opacity and tweak the spread color stops to make it look good
  51. Duplicate the front-most ring and move +75 on the Y axis and fill with just the flat pink used in the ring
  52. Copy one of the ellipses and create a mask so this ring can be like a shadow for under the actual ring
  53. Set to Multiply blend mode and 25% opacity
  54. Select both stroke highlights on the planet and set to a 20pt stroke w/ rounded caps, set stroke color to white and 85% opacity
  55. Select all the outer star and raindrop shapes and fill with white or cyan and set to Overlay
  56. Select any small ellipses and fill with the same gradient as the top left moon and rotate so green is on bottom and yellow on top(set to 0% transparency) and set to Color Dodge blend mode
  57. Duplicate one of those little ellipses and drag it over the waves and set to Screen blend mode
  58. Duplicate a bunch of times to create a texture
  59. Double click the Magic Wand tool and tick on the option to select like objects only with the same blend mode and select all the shapes we created
  60. Duplicate them and size them down and spread these smaller dots around a little
  61. Duplicate 3-4 dots and make these larger and position them all over the wave
  62. Select all these shapes and reduce the opacity to 20%
