Site Exclusive Tutorial Recording Notes:

Disclaimer: these are the actual notes I used to record this video and are written in a language you may or may not understand. Hopefully, you find them useful or cool.

  1. 2560×1440 new doc
  2. Solid color fill layer #f2f6d3
  3. Drag in map stock image. Street map is preferable.
  4. Use Lasso Tool and draw selection and feather edges of selection 200-400px.
  5. Mask the map layer to that selection
  6. Create Gradient Map #ba7f01 —–> #f1f0d4
  7. Use the hotkey Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Alt/Opt to merge all layers to a new layer and name this layer “map-flat” and hide this layer. We’ll get back to it later.
  8. Grab type tool and write “THE ZOO” using Arial Black font at 450pt size and set color #0d0d0d
  9. Duplicate the type layer and hide the original type layer and right-click on new type layer and choose “Convert to Shape”
  10. Grab the Direct Selection tool and select the inner path for the letter “O” and delete this path to make the “O” a solid circle of color. Do this to both “O”’s that we have.
  11. Next, Cmd/Ctrl + click the layer thumbnail of the original type layer (the hidden one) to load it as a selection and select the “map-flat” layer and hit Cmd/Ctrl + J to cut that chunk out and pop it up onto a new layer.
  12. Name this layer “opened-door”
  13. Add a Levels adjustment layer and clip it to the “opened-door” layer
  14. Set the Levels layer to: 0/0.8/255//0/245
  15. Select the “opened-door” layer and grab the Rectangular Marquee tool and drag a selection around the letters one-at-a-time and go Edit>Free Transform and grab the middle transform handle on the right and squeeze the letter toward the left and then right-click within the transform handles and choose to “Warp” and tweak and toy with the letter shape a little to mix things up.
  16. Create a new layer and fill with 50% gray and set to Soft Light and clip to the the Levels Adjustment. Name this layer “Dodge&Burn”
  17. Use the Burn tool to create a burned/shadow edge along the left edge of the “opened-door” letters.
  18. Duplicate the “opened-door” layer and drag it below the original “opened-door” layer.
  19. Hit Cmd/Ctrl + U and drag the brightness to -100 to convert the text to solid black.
  20. Use Rectangular Marquee tool to drag a selection around one letter at a time and use hotkey Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + J to cut to a new layer. Repeat until all letters are on their own layer.
  21. Blur each of the letters using a 20px Gaussian Blur.
  22. Select one of the layers and go Edit>Free Transform and move the reference point to the top left of the transform box and set the “V” (Vertical Skew) to 18
  23. Group these blurred letters layers together and reduce the group’s opacity to 65%
  24. Name the group “letter-shadows”
  25. Duplicate the shape layer of our type and name this layer “inner-shadow”. Your layer stack should be something like this:
  26. “opened-door” layer
  27. “letter-shadows” layer group
  28. “text-inner-shadow” layer
  29. original shape layer from the type layer
  30. Select that “text-inner-shadow” layer and reduce the Fill opacity to 0% and go Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options
  31. Tick on Layer Mask Hides Effects
  32. Tick on Inner Shadow and set the Inner Shadow to: black, 55% opacity, angle: -33º distance: 10px, size: 7px
  33. Extract any animals and plants you wish to use in your text effect.
  34. Drag the animals in and convert to a Smart Object right away and then transform and scale and put in place.
  35. Mask away bits of animals, letters, and shadows as needed to create the text effect illusion of the animals waving through the text.
  36. I dragged any birds or frogs or foreground animals and dragged these layers above shadow and opened-letters layers.
  37. Create a new layer above the “Dodge&Burn” layer and clip it to that stack of clipped layers above the “opened-door” layer and name this layer “shadows-2” and grab a soft-edged brush and paint shadows that would be in place for the animals and blur this shadow layer using a 20px Gaussian blur.
  38. Create Color Balance Adjustment Layer: S/+15/-5/+20 M/+15/+10/-20 H/+10/0/-10
  39. Create a Selective Color Adjustment Layer:
  40. Whites: Cyan:0/Magenta:-10%/Yellow:+15%/Black:+15%
  41. Neutrals: Cyan:-15%/Magenta:-5%/Yellow:+10%/Black:-15%
  42. Blacks: Cyan:0/Magenta:+5%/Yellow:-5%/Black:-10%
  43. Create a 50% gray layer set to Soft Light and use Camera RAW editor to create grain. Reduce opacity, etc… as needed.
