DxO ONE is a 20MP DSLR-Quality Camera That’s Used with Your iPhone

dxo-One-iPhone-Camera
Brand new iPhone accessory that clips into your phone’s Lightning connector rather than via Bluetooth/WiFi, which some other devices are doing. The camera is supposed to give you dSLR quality images. Very small form factor, squeezing in a 1-inch, 20.2 MP sensor. Touch screen on the back to swipe between modes, shutter button on top. Fixed lens – equivalent of a 32mm wide focal length, opens up to f/1.8, down to f/11. Shutter can stay open for up to 15 seconds and the ISO ranges from 100 to 51,200! See the camera and more detail here.

Shoots raw and JPG and a mode called “SuperRaw”, which apparently takes 4 consecutive raw images, stacking them to filter out sensor noise. It also shoots video, with options of 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 120fps.

The camera comes with an app for manual controls and monitoring.

Downside? The camera costs $599.

The New Canon G3 X Premium 20MP Compact Camera

Well Canon is at it again, they’ve released a new compact camera called the G3 X which is a step up from the current G7 X line of cameras. The G3 X is said to offer a DSLR-like experience with a non-interchangeable lens, a large sensor, and what Canon calls “the most rugged of the G-series yet”-which seems due to additional rubber weather-sealing and improved camera body construction. The camera is coming out soon and has an MSRP of about $1,000. I’ve got the specs listed below and Howard and I talk about what we think about it in the podcast. Is Canon clueless, or really clueless?

1-inch 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor
f/2.8-5.6 lens (F7.6 – F15.2 in terms of a full frame DSLR)
ISO range of 125 to 12,800
31-point Auto Focus system
Built-in 5-axis image stabilization
3.2-inch, multi angle LCD screen
Built in pop-up flash
RAW image capability (the camera has excellent dynamic range)
Full 1080p HD video at 24, 30, or 60fps
Ability to record externally via the HDMI port on the camera
Built in microphone plug and headphone jack
Built in WiFi with NFC

Notes: No 4k video. No electronic viewfinder (though you can buy one and place it in the hotshoe). Doesn’t Canon know about the Sony R100 IV (which we talked about last week) or the Panasonic FZ1000 or the Panasonic LX100. The dynamic range does seem excellent and the still photo quality isn’t bad either. For a $1,000 MSRP though? Nah.

Breathtaking Photo Retouch

Photographer Antti Karppinen created a stunning portrait of a musician sitting on a ledge, overtop rushing waters. Created using several images from around town. As an example, the ledge that’s sitting against the wall in the final result, was actually a ramp of stones on the ground.

The video outlines his thought process from sketch all the way to final process. Very interesting how he thought outside of the box to come up with the end image.

Sprint Stops Data Throttling In Wake of New Net Neutrality Rules

sprint-throttling-data-for-its-users
In the wake of AT&T recently (Wednesday, June 17th, 2015) being fined $100m for throttling ‘unlimited’ data plans that it had offered its users, Sprint has decided to stop throttling data as well, they say, in the wake of some new Net Neutrality rules.

According to CNET Sprint “told the Journal it believes its policy would have been allowed under the new rules but said it dropped the policy just in case. Sprint also said it had retained the right to prioritize traffic based on a customer’s plan, though it had never done so and had decided that such a policy is no longer necessary.”

Data Throttling is the act of slowing down the speed at which data transfers from cellular network to and from the user’s cell phone. For obvious reasons people complain that this shouldn’t be happening on the “Unlimited” data plans offered by these carriers.

New Info Leaked About iPad Pro

iPad-Pro-Rumors
12.9-inch display at 2732 x 2040, big enough to squeeze two full sized iPad apps side by side. Developers were sniffing around iOS 9 and found hits of the larger display and a new keyboard that can adjust itself for larger resolution displays. You’ve got to check out this video from CNET and see just what may be in store if this iPad Pro is in fact a reality.

Your Smartphone Could Have Serious Security Flaws

Researchers have found that both iOS and Android are open enough for security attacks. A hole in the Swift keyboard that comes preinstalled on Android devices could leave up to 600 million phones vulnerable.

Researchers have also found that malware could potentially get through Apple’s App Store gatekeepers, but hasn’t found its way onto the platform. Yet.
Bottom line: Nothing is safe. Even the government.

Lawyer / Photographer Sue Hundreds, Many Falsely. One Strikes Back!

Richard Bell, A photographer, who also happens to be a lawyer, has been suing hundreds of people who have been using his images, particularly his “skyline” image, without proper licence. He recently sued Charles Lantz, claiming he also used his photo without permission, but later found to be without merit. Richard eventually withdrew the lawsuit, but Lantz wasn’t having it. He’s counter-suing to the tune of $33,974.65.

Richard Bell has a history of filing lawsuits, quickly offering settlements to avoid going to court. Big question: how many of the people he sued were in similar situations to Charles Lantz.

Quick E3 Wrap Up and New Games, Etc…

ps4-vs-xbox-one

Microsoft and Sony both had very positive tech to show off at E3 this year. Things are looking up!
Microsoft says they’re adding backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games (many users have been asking for this.)
HoloLens is making the VR/Augmented reality look really, really good with an insane Minecraft demo they showed off.
Nintendo, on the other hand, was pretty negative. They seem to be confused with what they want to offer and can’t get out of their own way.
