Learn to Sketch & Ink Artwork in Illustrator CC!

LEARN TO MAKE YOUR PENCIL SKETCHES INKED ARTWORK IN ILLUSTRATOR! | We’ll create some custom brushes and work with opacity to create some nice looking strokes.

In this Illustrator tutorial, we’ll use a sketch that has been scanned into our computer and create a series of rough sketches over it first and once we’ve settled on an initial sketch that we like we’ll create an art brush and use the to create thick, inked lines over our rough sketching. Once we’ve got out inked lines, I’ll show you the merging trick that I use with the Shaper Tool to help clean up the lines where it is needed. Hope you enjoy this video!

Site Exclusive Tutorial Recording Notes:

Disclaimer: these are the actual notes I used to record this video and are written in a language you may or may not understand. Hopefully, you find them useful or cool.

  1. Drag a sketch in (Share the hamster sketch I have)
  2. Lock up the base layer and dim image to 50%
  3. Create a 5pt calligraphy brush and set layer to Multiply and 35% opacity and rough sketch over the sketch to begin building the line artwork by stroking with the Brush tool over and over and over
  4. Build out edges, outline, and keep making sketches to flesh out the rough sketch of your artwork
  5. Create an Art Brush from an ellipse and draw out another copy of the sketch if needed
  6. Expand all Strokes to fill
  7. At this point we’d be ready to begin the shading process, but we’ll save that for another video.
